The role:

MTM Skilled Operatives undertake corrective, preventative maintenance and renewals activities of track assets including: rail, sleepers, ballast, formation, reserve management, drainage and geometry management.
This role, located out of our Caulfield Maintenance Depot will work an 8 on 6 off night shift roster (subject to change with business requirements)

The ideal applicant will have rail experience in a similar role and will be prepared to upskill to ensure they can contribute to Track Force Protection Coordinator duties, if not already qualified in this area.

Main duties:

  • Undertake maintenance and installation work to ensure the timely completion of maintenance or renewal tasks
  • Perform construction and installation of construction, maintenance, renewal or upgrade of track assets, including: rail, sleepers, ballast, formation, reserve management, drainage and geometry management
  • Complete labouring tasks using hand tools and mechanical tools
  • Undertake manual handling, use hand tools and operate mobile plant
  • Regularly perform one or more of the following tasks: welding, track inspection or operation of mobile/mechanised plant
  • Perform Track Force Protection Coordinator safe working duties
  • Carry out regular checks as per plant maintenance schedules
  • Ensure works performed meet the quality standards prescribed by Metro Trains
  • Maintain the workplace, yards and any tools/equipment being used

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Train Track Safety Awareness Certificate – mandatory
  • Track Force Protection Coordinator – mandatory
  • Medium Rigid (MR) driver’s license – mandatory
  • Licence to operate at least one of the following:
  • Loader
  • Excavator
  • Hi-Rail vehicle
  • Rail Infrastructure (Rail Maintenance) Certificate III – mandatory specialising in at least one of:
  • Aluminothermic welding
  • Flash butt welding
  • Track inspection
  • Operation of mechanised plant
  • 5 years track work experience – mandatory
  • Interested in and familiar with mechanical systems
  • Sound knowledge of the safety requirements of working in the rail and maintenance industry, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Codes of Practice, regulations, safe working practices and High Voltage Rules
  • Ability to undertake work shift duties, on a 24 hour 7 day a week roster and work reasonable overtime as required and respond to after hour's emergencies
