Diverse and Inclusive place to work

Diversity and Inclusion have been a focus for Metro over the last few years. We have a clear strategy and a passionate focus on this important work. It’s all about building our culture and paving the way for an even more diverse and inclusive workplace experience. To us, diversity is about promoting diversity of thought and encouraging a workplace culture that fosters different thinking and innovation of ideas to drive change. We’re committed to taking real action across a range of strategic focus areas including - gender equity, cultural inclusion and LGBTI+ acceptance – all which will help us evolve as an organisation.

Working with our community

At Metro, we care about our people, our passengers and the communities they live in. This is why we have established Metro Cares, which focuses our community investment on the social issues impacting our business – community safety, mental health & wellbeing and social inclusion (including homelessness). Through our Community Connect program we support like-minded organisations to assist our most vulnerable community members. Our partners include The Salvation Army, Melbourne City Mission, Lifeline and Travellers Aid. Our own Community Education Unit also provides rail safety education for schools and communities across greater metropolitan Melbourne. Through our Giving Back program, we support the community involvement of Metro employees and foster community participation with Metro Cares Community Grants. Our Lively Stations program helps to bring our stations to life by supporting community access to stations for fundraising, station gardens and arts activations

Socially Responsible Employment (SRE) Program

Sustainable and socially responsible businesses make sure that they contribute to the communities in which they operate. Providing secure employment for vulnerable members of our community is one way of doing this. At Metro we aim to create a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. This is why we have developed the Socially Responsible Employment (SRE) Program.

The Socially Responsible Employment (SRE) Program provides Metro Trains Melbourne with a sustainable and diverse talent pipeline of job seekers identified from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds and under-represented communities. We partner with various agencies in developing a talent pipeline of Job-ready, reliable candidates for employment opportunities. This is achieved through candidate care, support, robust training and pre-employment checks in ensuring we attract and recruit job seekers who fit closely with our company values and behaviours. There are numerous categories of socially disadvantaged and under-represented groups, the key groups we focus on include:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI);
  • Asylum seekers;
  • Ex-automotive workers ;
  • Long-term unemployed;
  • Persons with a disability;
  • Refugees; and
  • Unemployed youth
