We’re currently seeking an Underfloor Wheel Lathe (UFWL) Operator for the Craigieburn Depot

 

This role is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the Underfloor Wheel Lathe (UFWL). In addition to operating the UFWL, the operator is also accountable for performing maintenance on Rolling Stock during periods when the lathe is not in use. As a key member of the team, the UFWL Operator plays an essential role in ensuring the effective maintenance of MTM’s Rolling Stock wheels across all fleet types.

      • Day 6am – 2pm
      • Afternoon 1pm - 9pm

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Coordinate expected train movements for planned and unplanned UFWL activities with Metrol and the Signal Box.
  • Ensure the safe movement of trains into and out of the UFWL facility, conducting handover, establishing work requirements and providing instruction.
  • Perform multiple machine set ups for varying wheel profiles and diameters required.
  • Apply methods of wheel profiling and evaluation to ensure compliance with requirements of wheel diameter tolerances across axis, bogies and carriages.
  • Carry out required maintenance tasks to ensure the train leaves the UFWL facility in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Be responsible for the day-t-day activities associated with the UFWL facility, including;
    • Appropriate disposal of waste
    • Maintain cleanliness of the facility
    • Correct and timely reporting of building and machine defects
    • Maintenance of all UFWL records
    • Daily checks and UFWL maintenance activities
    • Maintenance of tooling
    • Maintenance of a daily activities log
  • Maintain asset management systems as required through the use of proprietary and specialised technology systems to accurately record wheel data on fleet form tracking records.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 2+ years post apprenticeship practical experience as a Tradesperson
  • Fitter and Turner qualifications
  • Previous experience within a maintenance environment
  • CNC heavy machine qualifications
  • Driver’s licence
  • Previous Rolling Stock maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated expertise within a similar role
  • Sound knowledge of Rolling Stock wheel, axle and bearing maintenance and condition preferred
  • Experience of working in accordance with processes and procedures
