Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city – a city that is becoming increasingly reliant on public transport networks. Since 2009, Metro proudly continues to operate and maintain a world-class train service and network through to delivering significant transport projects that will shape how Melbourne moves. With Zero Harm at the foundation of everything we do, we want everyone to get home safely. We are one team, helping to connect and shape a better Melbourne.
People Business Partner
We are seeking an experienced People Business Partner to join our Operations, Passenger and Delivery (OPD) team. This is a key role within the people division, responsible for exceptional people outcomes that align with Metro’s strategic priorities.
At Metro, we are committed to fostering a more gender-equitable workplace and rail industry. As part of our efforts to encourage greater diversity, we welcome applications from everyone who shares our passion for an inclusive and dynamic workforce.
About the Role:
We’re looking for an experienced and proactive People Business Partner with experience in EA covered, frontline employees to enable sustainable business performance by providing business partnering support across a designated portfolio. In this role, you’ll work across the full spectrum of people-related disciplines, collaborating closely with the broader People team, business leaders, and centres of excellence.
You’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering an aligned People strategy, while driving impactful initiatives and programs that support our Operations and Passenger Delivery teams. If you're passionate about influencing positive organisational outcomes and building strong, trusted partnerships, we’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Do:
At Metro, we're all about delivering safe, reliable journeys — and we know that starts with our people. In this role, you’ll play a key part in making that happen by:
- Collaborate with our Senior People Business Partner to shape and bring to life a People Plan that supports both business goals and employee experience.
- Drive real change by supporting business transformations — from designing new organisational structures to planning and implementing changes that boost performance.
- Lead the rollout of programs that foster a positive, high-performing culture, including initiatives tied to our employee engagement survey results.
- Help shape our future leadership by supporting talent reviews, succession planning, and leadership coaching. You may also lead exciting, company-wide projects that influence how we grow and develop our people.
- Coach and uplift leaders, helping them build confidence and capability in how they manage and support their people.
- Manage and support high-risk ER matters and work with senior colleagues to find the right path forward and mitigate risk
- Use data and metrics to generate insights that empower leaders to make smarter, people-first decisions.
- Play a role in enhancing our policies and templates, making sure they support a fair, inclusive, and consistent employee experience.
- Be the go-to contact for your portfolio’s People-related questions — you’ll manage the full employee lifecycle with care and clarity.
- Join training sessions to deepen your understanding of Metro’s people policies and help educate and empower frontline managers to apply them confidently.
- Provide clear, compliant advice on complex people matters that go beyond everyday questions.
- Work closely with our Centres of Excellence to bring People initiatives to life — and help our teams thrive.
- Support managers with employee relations issues such as grievances, performance concerns, and employee exits, always focusing on minimising risk and supporting fairness.
- Regularly connect with key stakeholders to share updates, tackle issues, and ensure we’re making real progress on People priorities and projects.
- Follow Metro’s policies and procedures and jump in to support additional tasks that align with your skills and support the team.
Organisational Responsibilities:
- Driving Purpose & Impact – Be part of something bigger by helping us deliver on Metro’s strategic goals, with safety and passengers at the heart of everything you do.
- Living Our Values – Lead by example by embracing our values: Zero Harm, Caring, One Team, Dependable, and Make a Difference — and help build a professional, respectful, and inclusive culture where everyone feels valued.
- Championing Safety & Wellbeing – Contribute to our strong Zero Harm culture by looking out for yourself and your colleagues, and continuously improving how we care for people and the environment.
- Collaborating with Purpose – Build great relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders to create real impact and deliver results that matter.
- Supporting Our Success – Play a role in helping us retain our rail operator accreditation and meet key commitments under the Franchise Agreement.
- Thinking Commercially – Use your smarts and insight to help us work smarter: reduce waste, control costs, and find ways to be more effective and efficient.
- Doing the Right Thing – Make sure we’re meeting all our compliance, reporting, and risk responsibilities — and speak up if something doesn’t look right. You’ll help uphold the trust we’ve built as a proud part of Melbourne’s public transport network.
You’ll be a great fit if you are someone who:
You are a confident HR professional with deep HR generalist experience and a passion for performing well. You thrive in complex environments, bring a strategic lens to problem-solving, and are comfortable navigating a broad range of people-related matters with professionalism and empathy.
You will bring:
- Tertiary qualification in HR or other relevant discipline
- Generalist HR roles within a complex, multidisciplinary environment within a large EA driven business.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working in unionised environments.
