About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Building Services Design Review Lead with electrical design experience to support the delivery of Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority’s (VIDA) Level Crossing Removal Projects on behalf of Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM). In this role, you will provide design assurance and technical leadership to ensure Building Services designs meet MTM standards, operational requirements, and rail safety obligations throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring the safety of our employees, contractors and passengers while protecting the integrity of the MTM’s operating system.
As a technical leader within Engineering Projects, you will lead the Building Services and Fire Life Safety Design Review team, providing expert advice, guidance, and assurance across a diverse range of projects. You will work closely with VIDA project delivery alliance teams and internal MTM stakeholders to review and assess designs and technical documentation, ensuring compliance with MTM's Design Assurance procedures, standards, governance frameworks, and operational requirements.
You will also play a key role in fostering strong stakeholder relationships across the business, supporting collaboration, consistency of engineering outcomes, and alignment with organisational standards, assurance frameworks, discipline governance, and professional engineering practice.
This is a full-time position based at our Exhibition Street office.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Building Services and Fire Life Safety design assurance process across VIDA projects, ensuring timely and effective reviews in accordance with MTM's Design Assurance Procedure, project delivery requirements and agreed KPI targets.
- Review engineering designs from an electrical perspective, drawings, reports and technical queries to ensure compliance with MTM standards, Project Requirements Specifications (PRS), operational requirements and Rail Safety National Law obligations.
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise to resolve complex Building Services issues, engineering changes, waivers, design non-conformances and other technical matters.
- Identify, assess and provide advice on design risks, non-conformances and proposed mitigations, including recommendations on the acceptability of departures from standards and operational requirements.
- Represent MTM in project meetings, design reviews, risk assessments and technical workshops, influencing outcomes that support safe, reliable and maintainable railway operations.
- Liaise and collaborate with VIDA Alliance teams and internal MTM stakeholders to coordinate design-related matters and facilitate efficient project delivery.
- Develop, maintain and enhance Engineering Standards, Specifications, Technical Notes and other engineering governance documentation to support continuous improvement and professional practice.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering technical capability, knowledge sharing and engineering excellence across the team.
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in engineering or equivalent
- Significant experience in electrical engineering within the Building Services area within complex infrastructure, transport, rail or major project environments
- Strong knowledge of engineering assurance, design review and governance processes (desirable)
- Demonstrated experience supporting technical teams and developing engineering capability
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills
- Experience interpreting and applying engineering standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues
- Experience participating in risk assessments and multidisciplinary project reviews and ability to manage competing priorities
