We are delighted to announce that we are looking for a Head of Occupational Health and Safety to uphold safety standards, stakeholder relationships and provide leadership in driving a transformative safety culture, and instil the behaviours, mindset and practices that drive zero harm to our passengers, colleagues, the public, and the network.
As a senior leader in the business with multiple internal and external stakeholders you will have standout communication skills and the ability to influence and negotiate. You will be leading and coaching a small team of motivated individuals, identifying opportunities to leverage strengths and build the team’s capability. The role holds responsibility for development and project management of frameworks, standards, policies, procedures and initiatives to ensure we maintain all certifications and accreditations to operate.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Manages the development and review of corporate SMS documentation through consultation with internal and external stakeholders, this may include; running workshops, workgroups, change management processes and risk assessments.
- Supports external regulator relationships and enquiries with:
- ONRSR (Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator): Comply with national rail safety regulations and standards
- ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau)/OTSI: Cooperate with transport accident investigations and implement recommend dations to enhance safety.
- WorkSafe Victoria: Compliance with all OHS legislation and regulations
- Manages, and governs MTM’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Plan including psychological hazards and Rail Safety to ensure compliance and continuous improvement
- Drives a transformational safety culture to deliver world-class safety practices and zero harm through management of the Zero Harm Program
- Manages MTMs Drug and Alcohol Testing program through the implementation of programs and protocols to conduct regular testing for all employees to ensure they are fit for duty
- Responsible for MTMs Safety Training and Awareness to ensure employees are capable of identifying and mitigating safety risks.
- Responsible for developing a psychological health framework in line with the amendment regulations.
- Maintains strong relationships with stakeholders across the business to ensure that beneficial relationships are developed and maintained.
About You
- Tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline and/or alternative qualifications / professional memberships demonstrating core knowledge.
- Minimum 5 years post graduate occupational health and safety, safety risk management, or audit experience (preferably gained within a rail, transport, safety critical, manufacturing, or heavy industry environment.
- Demonstratable experience and knowledge of risk management and internal control frameworks, particularly as they relate to safety related matters.
- Significant experience (minimum 10 years) in safety leadership positions for large enterprises with a significant operational exposure.
- Understand and apply matrix management techniques with a demonstrated high level of consultation, negotiation, influencing and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Post graduate occupational health and safety, safety risk management, or audit experience (preferably gained within a rail, transport, safety critical, manufacturing, or heavy industry environment.
- Well-developed working knowledge of the relevant legislative framework in Australia.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable Safety legislation
- Possess demonstrated experience in developing and leading teams, managing budgets and programs of work.
- Knowledge of current cost control and project management methodologies.
- High level of experience in using Word, Excel & Outlook.
- Strong stakeholder management experience to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders in a complex and politically and industrially sensitive environment.
- Solid report writing, analytical ability and critical thinking with the ability to work autonomously.
