The Metro Tunnel Project (MTP) is a transformational public transport project that will bring more trains to your suburb and reduce travel times by running the busy Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines through a new tunnel. By untangling the City Loop, more trains can run more often across Melbourne.

We’ve finished digging twin 9km tunnels, and construction is underway on 5 new stations and testing of the new High Capacity Signalling system that will enable turn-up-and-go services.

Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Technical Document Writer to join the MTP Team. 


The Role


The Technical Document Writer is responsible for the development of a suite of underground railway station operating procedures, work instructions and guidance notes (including emergency management procedures) to support the commissioning and readiness activities of the 5 new underground stations as part of the Metro Tunnel Project. 


The Technical Document Writer must be able to communicate complex, technical information through the development of a Station Operations Manual that is engaging and easily understood by railway station frontline staff.





  • Responsible for the development of station operating procedures, work instructions and guidance notes in preparedness for MTP trial operations and Day-1 revenue services.
  • Maintain a delivery program and ensure progress is reported regularly through Integrated program updates. 
  • Produce simple, polished and high-quality documentation that meets MTM applicable standards and is easily understood by the key stakeholder group (MTM Passenger Experience frontline staff).
  • Lead consultation workshops with key stakeholders throughout the development of the Station Operating manual
  • Ensure new procedures comply with risk provisions of Rail Safety National Law, Occupational Health and Safety Act (Vic) and Emergency Management Act.



About You


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in professional writing, English, Communications or business and technology.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ industry experience working in a comparable role. 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, managing and executing rail/station operational strategies, highly desirable. 
  • Ability to quickly interpret and understand technical specifications and complex information and simplify for target audience.
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to maintain a professional approach with all personnel across all levels of business and foster a team orientated culture.
  • Ability to schedule work priorities to ensure deadlines are strictly adhered to but also possess the ability to address difficult and complex tasks within compressed timeframes.
  • Extensive experience in using software platforms, i.e. Microsoft Office, PowerBi suite.
