About the role 

As part of the Rolling Stock team, this role falls under the SERQ (Safety, Environment, Risk & Quality) group within MTM’s Network Assets & Assurance division. 

 

The position is essential in embedding risk management principles into the daily operations of depots and maintenance activities.  This role extends beyond traditional desk-based responsibilities, requiring active engagement in the field through the facilitation of workshops, execution of audits and inspections, and leadership of safety, quality, and compliance-focused discussions.

 

A permanent opportunity primarily based at our Kananook depot.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct structured risk assessments across Rolling Stock and depot operations, ensuring asset-related risks are controlled and reviewed while maintaining and applying MTM’s ISO 31000-based Risk Management Standard.
  • Maintain divisional asset and operational risk registers, tracking known and emerging hazards across depot infrastructure, Rolling Stock asset and rolling stock operations.
  • Conduct internal audits, site inspections, and peer reviews of critical controls while leading and supporting incident investigations.
  • Track and close non-conformances, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and lessons learned are integrated into risk registers.
  • Develop, test, and update contingency plans to minimise disruptions to depot operations, Rolling Stock maintenance, and asset performance.
  • Align business continuity planning with risk assessments and operational needs, ensuring resilience against asset-related disruptions.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to develop practical guidelines, training sessions, and record-keeping methods that integrate risk controls into day-to-day operations. 

 

About you

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and engage stakeholders, with a demonstrated capacity to influence decision-making across all organisational levels.
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments and facilitating risk workshops, supported by knowledge of ISO 31000 or similar standards.
  • Practical experience in conducting risk assessments in line with ISO 31000 and facilitating risk workshops, complemented by certification or demonstrated expertise in ISO 9001 internal auditing, including leading audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, Power BI, Word, and Visio, along with experience using Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) tools to support data analysis, reporting, and risk management activities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills, with the ability to independently manage priorities and adapt swiftly to new challenges.
  • A tertiary qualification in Governance, Risk & Compliance, Business, or a related discipline, with a strong understanding of the rail sector and relevant legislative and environmental standards (preferred but not essential), as well as familiarity with project management principles and methodologies.
