About the team
This role sits within Metro Trains Melbourne’s (MTM) Network Assets & Assurance (NA&A) division, specifically in the Rolling Stock team under SERQ (Safety, Environment, Risk & Quality). The SERQ team plays a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and sustainable train operations by supporting risk and assurance across Rolling Stock maintenance, depots, and asset management. We work closely with engineers, technicians, and operational staff to manage risks and drive continuous improvement in safety and compliance. You’ll be part of a supportive and engaged team, where we share knowledge, solve problems together, and enjoy a collaborative work environment.
About the role
Reporting directly to the Rolling Stock Risk & Quality Manager, the Risk & Assurance Specialist will be instrumental in embedding risk management into daily depot and maintenance activities. This is not a purely desk-based role—you’ll be in the field, facilitating workshops, conducting audits and inspections, and leading discussions that improve safety, quality, and compliance. You will collaborate with engineers, depot managers, and frontline staff, helping them identify and mitigate risks, investigate incidents, and maintain compliance with key standards such as ISO 9001 and ONRSR regulations.
What you will be doing

Facilitate Risk Assessments

Plan and lead structured workshops and on-site reviews to identify and evaluate risks across Rolling Stock and depot operations.

Maintain Risk Registers

Monitor and update risk registers, ensuring known and emerging hazards are documented and tracked.

Embed Risk & Assurance Processes

Collaborate with maintenance teams to develop practical guidelines, training sessions, and record-keeping methods that integrate risk controls into day-to-day operations.

Conduct Audits and Inspections

Perform internal audits, site inspections, and peer reviews to validate risk controls and ensure compliance with MTM, ISO 9001, ISO31000 and ONRSR safety standards.

Investigate Incidents

Apply root cause analysis to incident investigations, propose control improvements, and verify their effectiveness.

Provide Reporting and Insights

Deliver clear, actionable reports that help managers and frontline teams make informed decisions regarding safety and operational excellence.

Integrate Business Continuity

Develop, test, and maintain contingency plans to minimise disruptions, ensuring alignment with risk assessments and operational needs.

Mentor and Coach Support colleagues across various teams, embedding risk awareness and best practices into everyday work.

Essential Skills & Experience
-
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, with a track record of influencing at all levels.

Hands-on experience in conducting risk assessments (ISO 31000) and facilitating risk workshops.

Certified or experienced in ISO 9001 internal auditing, plus experience leading audits, inspections, or compliance reviews.

Proven capability in incident investigation and root cause analysis.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, Word, and Visio.

3+ years’ experience in Risk & Assurance, preferably in a technical or operational setting.

Familiarity with Quality and Risk Management tools; ability to work both independently and in teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience
-
Lead auditor certification (e.g., ISO 9001 Lead Auditor).

ICAM certification or similar for incident investigations.
-
Tertiary qualification in Risk, Quality, or a related discipline.

Power BI or other data analytics/reporting tool experience.

Background in a regulated industry (rail, transport, infrastructure) with knowledge of legislative standards.

Experience setting up or improving risk and assurance processes in newly commissioned facilities.
