Position Overview

The Senior Rolling Stock Mechanical Systems Engineer is principally responsible for the effective and efficient review of new train design bogie & suspension, brakes, carbody structure, gangway and couplers. Furthermore, review of HVAC, train interiors and other key elements supported by these structures to ensure compliance with standards and compatibility with the Melbourne Rail Network are expected.  

This role will form part of a team of engineers to facilitate the introduction of new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains onto the MTM Network.
The MTM New Trains Engineering Review Group ensures that design produced by Alstom meets MTM’s obligations as an accredited Rail Transport Operator (RTO) and Rail Infrastructure Manger (RIM) under the Rail Safety National Law (RSNL). 


Key Responsibilities

  • Providing design review and assurance activities that demonstrate that the X’Trapolis 2.0 train is compliant to specification and manufactured and tested in a rigorous manner to enable its safe operation on the Melbourne Rail Network. 
  • The review scope will include kinematic modelling reports of train behaviour, test plans and test reports to verify the compliance of the train and assure its fitness as a passenger train on the Metro Trains Network. 
  • Liaison and co-ordination of design related matters with members of the State X’Trapolis 2.0 project team as well as with multiple internal MTM departments.
  • Review design information from the train supplier within designated timelines, including drawings, calculations, test procedures, proposed maintenance specifications.
  • Verification of rolling stock designs with respect to bogie & suspension, brakes, carbody structure, gangways and couplers, HVAC and  vehicle interior design to identify non-conformances to standards and requirements.
  • Engage key stakeholders throughout X’Trapolis 2.0 Project team, Network Assets and Assurance division and broader MTM organisation.
  • Attend risk assessments, workshops, meetings and similar activities by project parties.

Experience Criteria

  • Working knowledge of Metro, its Operations and stakeholders 
  • Engineers Australia membership
  • Knowledge in a railway system operational or design environment 
  • Practice in using project management methodologies


  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical engineering or equivalent 
  • 8+ years experience in Engineering/Rolling Stock design & maintenance
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with structural analysis and/or vehicle dynamics and stakeholder engagement across multi - disciplinary organisation
