About the role

 

Lead our People Partnering team of three to support our Infrastructure division – a 1,000+ strong workforce that operates 24/7 to maintain the essential assets of Melbourne’s rail network. This includes over 1,000 kilometres of track, 40,000 structures, and critical signalling, electrical and facilities infrastructure that keep our network safe and reliable.


You will be a trusted advisor to the Infrastructure Leadership team and support the Head of People, NA&A to execute and deliver agreed strategic human resource activities.


This is a max term contract position to cover a secondment until the end of March 2026. You will be based in the West Melbourne/Docklands area, with time also spent at other Infrastructure depots and 700 Collins Street as part of a hybrid arrangement (3 days in the office / 2 days from home).
 
Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead, coach, and develop People Business Partners to drive outcomes aligned with Metro's strategic plan, focusing on performance, capability, and wellbeing.
  • Partner with the Head of People to drive and deliver the enterprise People Strategy within the Infrastructure division.
  • Provide coaching and strategic HR support to senior leaders on complex issues to enable effective leadership and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders and talent acquisition partners to deliver effective business focussed workforce plans to support delivery of tailored diversity strategies, particularly in areas with critical skill shortages.
  • Develop strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, in particular the People Division centres of expertise to address complex business needs, including change, and leadership development.
  • Partner with Workplace Relations to develop strategic union relationships that contribute to a stable and engaged workforce.
  • Deliver strategic HR initiatives that have measurable impact on employee engagement and operational performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of HR processes that enhance service delivery across the Infrastructure division.

 

About you
 

  • Tertiary qualification in Human Resources or a related discipline, with extensive experience as a trusted People Business Partner, leading HR functions and initiatives.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills with stakeholders across all levels.
  • Proven ability to navigate complex industrial environments, including common-law and enterprise agreement contexts.
  • Sound knowledge of employment law, workplace relations, workers compensation, and psychosocial legislation.
  • Skilled in solving complex HR issues, driving cultural and organisational change, and delivering results under pressure.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing HR strategies that drive positive business outcomes in large operational environments.
  • Experience in delivering workforce planning initiatives
