MTM is seeking to appoint two (2) full‑time Senior System Safety Assurance Engineers on maximum‑term contracts until 30 June 2026. These roles will be based at MTM’s Docklands Head Office.

 

The Senior System Safety Assurance Engineer leads the delivery of safety assurance activities for the X’Trapolis 2.0 train program, overseeing the delivery, acceptance, and integration of the fleet into network operations. The role is responsible for ensuring MTM’s safety assurance requirements are met, while proactively managing and reducing organisational risk exposure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of the X’Trapolis 2.0 Safety Assurance Management Plan.
  • Lead and coordinate the review of supplier safety assurance artefacts, providing value‑adding feedback to both the Project team and MTM.
  • Lead risk workshops in accordance with MTM’s Integrated Risk Management Procedure (A2023).
  • Coordinate submissions to MTM’s Risk Acceptance Working Group (RAWG) through the management of project risk registers, reporting on risk status and conducting periodic reviews of risk controls to confirm effective implementation.
  • Oversee the management of MTM‑identified items in project risk registers, maintaining visibility of hazards and assuring the implementation of linked mitigations and safety requirements by the Project.
  • Provide assurance and advice to New Train Risk and Safety Systems Assurance Manager and Head of Fleet SERQ that rail safety risks are being managed according to a mature and defensible SFAIRP methodology.
  • Work closely with the X’Trapolis 2.0 Engineering Team and related engineering disciplines in support of development of System Safety documentation in line with project milestones.
  • Coordinate and support the development of X’Trapolis 2.0 Safety Cases through the various stages of the Project lifecycle.
  • Draft assurance arguments to support MTM ISA and CCB acceptance of the XT2 train through progressive assurance process and ultimately into service.

Mandatory Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications and assurance experience, including a degree in Engineering (or an equivalent relevant discipline), with demonstrated experience delivering System Safety Assurance services and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in risk management or closely related roles.
  • Strong knowledge of safety and risk standards, including working knowledge of safety‑related standards such as ISO/IEC 61508 (Functional Safety of E/E/PE Safety‑Related Systems), EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, and iESM, with the capability to apply these standards within complex rail or safety‑critical environments.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rail safety legislation, including the ability to read, interpret, and apply the Rail Safety National Law Application Act 2013 and other relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong safety and professional capability, including adherence to occupational health, safety, and environmental procedures within the rail industry, supported by well‑developed analytical, interpersonal, and stakeholder consultation skills.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Extensive rail and rolling stock experience, including a minimum of two (2) years’ experience within the railway industry and proven involvement in rail projects, with demonstrated expertise in rolling stock environments and working knowledge of train operations, fleet, control systems, stations, customer services, infrastructure, signalling, and safe‑working systems—preferably within the MTM network.
  • Strong leadership and technical risk capability, including demonstrated experience operating at a senior management or senior stakeholder level, supported by practical application of qualitative and quantitative hazard identification and risk assessment techniques such as SIL allocation, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Event Tree Analysis (ETA).
