About the role
We’re seeking an enthusiastic and driven Structures Inspector/Analyst to join the Metro Infrastructure Structures team in supporting the safe and reliable operation of the Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) network. This role offers the opportunity to actively engage with ongoing improvement of the rail network and develop your technical expertise and rail experience in structural maintenance and asset management.
This role is a permanent full-time position working within a dynamic and self-motivated team, you’ll plan and execute visual inspections of structural assets across the rail network, capturing asset condition data to inform maintenance and renewal programs and drive meaningful change to the rail network.
Key responsibilities
- Act as Work Group Supervisor for small inspection work groups, managing safeworking resources, site safety and work sites within high-risk rail environments.
- Safely undertake visual inspections of structural assets including, but not limited to bridges, culverts, overhead structures, retaining walls, cuttings, platforms, and buildings.
- Prepare accurate inspection reports and complete defect, fault, incident, and access reporting.
- Plan and coordinate inspections with other Inspectors, safeworking resources, the Production Manager, and Technical Leads to prioritise work and optimise time on track.
- Use GIS and asset management systems to plan, record, and monitor inspections and defects.
- Adhere to Technical Maintenance Plan (TMP) schedules and maintain compliance with PPM requirements.
- Maintain inspection and safe‑working competencies and manage fatigue in line with MTM requirements.
- Work day/night shifts, weekends, and reasonable overtime as required, including emergency response.
About you
- Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of rail structures, asset management, or construction.
- Demonstrated understanding of structural deterioration, defect capture, assessing structural risks and nominating corrective maintenance actions.
- Demonstrated experience working within live rail environments.
- Knowledge of operational railway environments and safe working practices.
- Excellent organisational skills including planning, reporting, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with others and deliver outcomes independently.
- Ability to supervise minor works on site, prioritising Metro’s ‘Safely Always’ values
- Demonstrated experience using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, GIS, and other asset management systems.
- Engineering degree and/or experience as a Way Maintainer, Structures Maintainer, or Structures Inspector preferred.
- UET20619 - Certificate II in ESI - Asset Inspection & Testing certification preferred, but not required.
