Technical Lead

The role:

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager (Batman Depot, Coburg), you will act as the technical specialist for track asset management and will support operational teams by enabling the development of delivery strategies that ensure that the asset life is maximised and maintenance and renewal programs are optimised. In addition to strategic advice and analysis, you will also be required to support the delivery of inspection and maintenance programs targeted at critical failure modes identified against track assets.

This role is open to applicants wanting to make the transition into a new industry.

Main duties:

  • Provide technical support on the depot maintenance strategies by leveraging inspections teams and measurement systems to provide insights into the networks condition 
  • Seek and implement innovative methods of improving the information used by maintenance teams when developing or delivering maintenance strategies
  • Spearhead maintenance projects that aim to expedite the improvement of known failure modes of criticality 
  • Assist with incident and fault investigations to enable the future risk mitigation and improvement of outcomes as it relates to performance and safety
  • Apply technical expertise through maintenance and inspections teams by engaging and directing works 
  • Seek and drive the approval of alternate tools, materials or components that can realise financial and performance dividends for the Track department
  • Support the improvement of procedures, standards, and guidelines
  • Continue to develop and learn on the job as well as via external training programs

Education, skills and experience:


  • Technical tertiary qualification or Certificate III – Rail Infrastructure 
  • Practical experience in the maintenance or construction of mechanical systems
  • Friendly and cooperative team player


  • Experience in maintaining rail industry infrastructure
  • Programming / automation experience
  • Management experience
