About the role
The Wash Plant Operator plays a vital role in supporting the Train Presentation team by coordinating and carrying out train cleaning operations at Rolling Stock Depot Train Wash Plant Facilities, ensuring compliance with Metro procedures.
This role involves working closely with train drivers and liaising with Train Operation staff and coordinators to safely bring trains into the wash facility via the corridor. In addition to the routine external train wash cycle, which occurs every 42 days, the Wash Plant Operator is also responsible for assessing and managing trains that require additional exterior cleaning due to unexpected incidents on the network. This ensures all trains meet operational and presentation standards before returning to service.
Roster and Hours
The role operates on a 2-week rotating roster:
- Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Evening Shift: 6:00 PM – 2:00 AM
- Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays)
Key role responsibilities
- Operate the Wash Plant in line with Metro procedures and the Train Wash Plant System Operation Manual.
- Coordinate with the Train Presentation Officer and Train Operations staff for train positioning and biological waste removal.
- Complete the daily external wash summary sheet and ensure trains meet cleaning standards.
- Monitor Wash Plant performance, report faults, and arrange necessary repairs with approved providers.
- Perform minor servicing, including greasing, pit cleaning, and filter/jet maintenance.
- Ensure adequate chemical concentrate levels for continuous operation.
- Report train damage or vandalism via the Fault Management Portal.
- Conduct high-pressure cleaning and coordinate biological waste removal from unexpected incidents when required.
- Adhere to Quality Assurance, Rail Safety, and Workplace Health & Safety standards.
- Support audits, inspections, and ongoing business improvement initiatives across multiple Wash Plant facilities.
Qualifications & Experience
- Current valid Victorian Drivers Licence
- Knowledge of Rail Safety legislation
- Ability to work unsupervised
- Wash Plant experience would be looked on favourably
- Qualified in Track Awareness and First Aid Level 2 are beneficial but not essential
