We’re currently seeking a Depot Manager for the MTM Newport train maintenance Depot.

 

This role is responsible for overseeing maintenance team at the Newport Train Maintenance Facility to ensure the daily delivery of safe, clean, and reliable rolling stock in support of morning and evening operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead, and motivate a multidisciplinary team—including Rolling Stock maintainers, administrative staff, logistics, and support personnel—to deliver both scheduled and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Oversee strategic planning and coordination to ensure the consistent delivery of reliable trains for daily service, aligned with timetable requirements.
  • Promote and maintain a positive workplace culture and constructive industrial relations environment.
  • Provide strategic direction and support the implementation of future-focused maintenance initiatives that align with organisational goals and drive operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, maintenance, and organisational standards related to Rolling Stock operations.
  • Lead and manage organisational change initiatives in alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Develop strategic workforce plans to ensure flexibility and sustainability in support of future network changes.
  • Prepare and deliver performance reports covering all depot functions to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain operational readiness to respond effectively to incidents including train recoveries, vandalism, disasters, and collisions.
  • Oversee and continuously evaluate the depot budget to ensure optimal value and cost-efficiency for the business.
  • Support Metro’s strategic direction by understanding the plan, your role in delivering our objectives and seeking to exceed Metro’s goals and objectives particularly when it comes to safety and putting the passenger first.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications at graduate or postgraduate level in engineering, management, or a related business discipline; OR
  • A minimum of 5 years’ proven experience leading teams in a high-pressure, reactive operational environment; OR
  • Over 10 years’ experience in the rail industry in a supervisory or management capacity, with a strong track record of successfully leading large, diverse teams.
  • Knowledge and experience of risk / safety management in an operational environment.
  • Well-developed knowledge and understanding of data acquisition, processing and application across maintenance systems.
  • Core strengths in communication, team building and mentoring / coaching as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office skills.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of various train systems, types, operating procedures and environments.
  • An easy and open communication style both written and verbal, comfortable with audiences at all levels as well as being a natural problem solver.
  • Experience of industrial relations challenges.
