Melbourne Airport Rail is a transformational public transport project connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan train network for the first time. Detailed planning and development work is currently underway with construction commencing in 2022 and a target opening date of 2029.


Metro Trains has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Interface Lead to join the team.


The Role

The Engineering Interface Lead is responsible for ensuring compliance with Metro’s engineering processes whilst delivering Metro’s obligations to Sunshine Albion Package Alliance (SSA). This role will include governing outputs from within the Alliance and ensuring parties produce high quality deliverables that are compliant with Metro’s Engineering Management System Framework.

This role initially supports the Engineering Interface Manager through the Procurement Phase, and will later move into an Alliance for the Delivery Phase


This is a fulltime, permanent role initially based in Melbourne’s CBD and will move to the Sunshine project office late 2022.



  • Oversee, produce, maintain and/or coordinate the Alliance engineering management plans.

  • Undertake the development and delivery of engineering documentation such as Type Approvals, Standard Waivers, Engineering Change, Design Change Notices and Safety in Design.

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure engineering and design deliverables are managed in accordance with the program and comply with Metro’s Engineering Management System Framework.

  • Provide leadership and management to a team of specialist Coordinators

  • Effectively manage and maintain change management documentation that will be subject to internal and external audit compliance inspections.

  • Participate in the design review forums to ensure Metro customer service and operational needs are met and assist with the management of change processes including attendance at risk assessment workshops and risk review forums.

  • Identify and resolve issues associated with Scope, Design, Estimation, Scheduling, Risk Management.

  • Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships and partnerships to deliver best for project outcomes.


About You

  • Tertiary qualification in engineering, project management, construction or equivalent.

  • Minimum 5 years working experience in engineering, project management or equivalent discipline.

  • Demonstrated rail operational experience, highly preferred.

  • Ability to negotiate, persuade and influence opinions

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of management (both written and verbal).

  • Ability to read and interpret technical and non-technical documentation including contractual requirements.

  • Ability to prioritise and schedule work, in order to ensure deadlines are strictly adhered to

  • Ability to lead and develop both direct reports and key stakeholders
